This wasp stings - but not humans. Cockroaches. This is a hatchet wasp I found while eating lunch outdoors in Australia.It does delicate work: hunting for cockroach eggs hidden in tiny corners. Using its needle-like ovipositor, it pierces the tough egg case and lays its egg inside. The wasp larva grows inside the cockroach egg, feeding on it from within, slowly erasing it from existence. Eventually, it emerges as a fully formed adult. This is just one of hundreds of thousands of parasitic wasp species.
